Maspeth Crash Victims Freed With 'Jaws Of Life'

Smashed Up At Middle Village Intersection
     One person was hospitalized with minor injuries after being involved in a two-car accident at the intersection of 79th Place and Metropolitan Avenue in Middle Village last Tuesday morning, June 17, Fire Department sources said. Chemical Scare Prompts FDNY Action
     Firefighters responded to a Glendale home last Wednesday morning, June 18 after receiving reports of fumes emanating from five containers of an unidentified chemical stored in the basement. The incident, according to FDNY sources, took place at about 11:55 a.m. in the area of 82nd and Myrtle avenues. Members of Engine companies 319 and 294, Ladder Company 143 and Batallion 51 responded to the incident, along with an FDNY Hazmat unit. No injuries were reported, said FDNY sources. One Hurt In Fresh Meadows Blaze
     This four-story apartment building, at 160th St. in Fresh meadows, was the site of a one-alarm fire at 9:25 a.m. on June 17. Members of the 107th Precinct responded, as did FDNY Engine companies 298, 299, 305 and 315; Ladder companies 125, 151 and 152; Squad 270, Rescue Unit 4 and Battalions 50 and 52. Truck Timbers Tree In Glendale
     Power lines were reportedly damaged by a tree along Cooper Avenue in Glendale that was uprooted after being struck by a large truck last Tuesday morning, June 17. Fire Department sources said the accident occurred at around 11:10 a.m. along the roadway between 88th Street and Metropolitan Avenue. Manhole Fire, Collision In Maspeth
     Firefighters are pictured putting out a manhole fire in Maspeth on the morning of Tuesday, June 17. Reportedly, the incident took place at about 11:30 a.m. in the area of 64th Street and 56th Avenue. Members of Squad Company 288, Ladder companies 140 and 136 and Battalion 28 responded to the scene, along with members of the 104th Precinct and Con Edison employees. TAKING TO TRACK TO FIGHT CANCER
     Cancer survivors are shown in the top photo leading off the sixth-annual American Cancer Society Relay for Life at Middle Village's Juniper Valley Park last Saturday afternoon, June 21 with a "Survivor's Lap" around the Brennan Field running track. As noted, the fundraiser featured teams of residents and representatives of community organizations who raised over $137,000 for the organization by walking laps around the track through Sunday morning, June 22. The event included a luminaria lighting ceremony in which candles were lit around the track in tribute to those who have been afflicted by the disease. Members of the St. Margaret's Children's Choir and the Grace Notes, shown in the bottom photo, provided music for the occasion. Home Damaged In Woodhaven Fire
     Flames reportedly damaged the second story of a home on 88th Avenue near 78th Street in Woodhaven during a one-alarm fire last Tuesday afternoon, June 17. According to Fire Department sources, the blaze started at around 5:10 p.m. in the rear of the second-floor of the residence. Members of Engine companies 236, 285, 293 and 294; Ladder companies 107, 142 and 150; Squad Company 270; Rescue 4; and Battalions 39 and 44- under the direction of Division 13- responded to the scene along with the 102nd Precinct and EMS units.
