Firefighters reportedly used the Hurst tool (also known as the "Jaws of Life") to free two people who were trapped inside one of two vehicles that collided at the intersection of 56th Drive and Maurice Avenue in Maspeth last Tuesday afternoon, June 17. Firefighters responded to a Glendale home last Wednesday morning, June 18 after receiving reports of fumes emanating from five containers of an unidentified chemical stored in the basement. The incident, according to FDNY sources, took place at about 11:55 a.m. in the area of 82nd and Myrtle avenues. Members of Engine companies 319 and 294, Ladder Company 143 and Batallion 51 responded to the incident, along with an FDNY Hazmat unit. No injuries were reported, said FDNY sources. Power lines were reportedly damaged by a tree along Cooper Avenue in Glendale that was uprooted after being struck by a large truck last Tuesday morning, June 17. According to Fire Department sources, the blaze started at around 5:10 p.m. in the rear of the second-floor of the residence. Members of Engine companies 236, 285, 293 and 294; Ladder companies 107, 142 and 150; Squad Company 270; Rescue 4; and Battalions 39 and 44- under the direction of Division 13- responded to the scene along with the 102nd Precinct and EMS units.
