Traffic was tied up along Grand Avenue in Maspeth last Thursday morning, June 26 after a tractor-trailer hauling a load of sand overturned on the overpass above the Long Island Expressway, it was reported. Fire Department sources said the accident, which occurred at around 8:30 a.m., caused some of the sand to spill over the bridge and onto the highway below. Members of Engine Company 287, Squad Company 288, Ladder companies 136 and 140, Rescue 4, Haz-Mat 1, Battalion 46, the 104th Precinct, NYPD Highway Patrol Unit 3 and EMS units responded to the scene. The driver was reportedly taken to a local hospital with minor injuries. No other injuries were reported. Efforts to upright the truck are shown in the bottom photo. Flames reportedly damaged a Greenpoint delicatessen that caught fire early Saturday morning, June 28. Fire Department sources said the onealarm blaze broke out at around 4:45 a.m.on the first-floor of the four-story structure at the intersection of Manhattan and Greenpoint avenues. Members of Engine companies 221, 229, 238, 258 and 259; Ladder companies 106, 112 115 and 128; Squad Company 252; Rescue 4; and Battalions 35 and 45- under the direction of Division 14- responded to the scene along with the 94th Precinct and EMS units. Past and present members of Engine Company 303 and Ladder Company 106, along with Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta and other ranking FDNY officials, gathered at their South Jamaica headquarters last Wednesday, June 25 to mark the companies' 100th anniversary. As noted, the engine and ladder began operation on July 5, 1907 and were originally housed at two separate locations before coming together at their current headquarters on Princeton Street. The ceremony included the dedication of plaques in memory of two firefighters who died in the line of duty: Lt. Albert E. Donovan, who died in 1924 while battling a fire in Ozone Park; and Firefighter Robert Pettit, who died in 1944 while serving in combat during World War II. Family members of the late Phil Rizzuto, the former New York Yankees shortstop and announcer, joined elected officials at Smokey Oval Park last Friday, June 27 to rename the Richmond Hill green in honor of the baseball Hall of Famer who died last August at the age of 87. Renamed Phil "Scooter" Rizzuto Park, the dedication recalled the Glendale native's playing days at Richmond Hill High School- where he was named a PSAL all-star shortstop for Queens County in 1936- before moving on to the amateur Queens Alliance league en route to a professional baseball career.
