Astoria Runner Races To First
     Freshman Gabriel Vasquez of St. John's Prep in Astoria placed first in the boys' 2,500-meter run at the CHSAA Freshman and Sophomore Intersectional Championship meet held at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx on Saturday, Nov. 1. Running in a field of top runners from New York City and Long Island high schools, Vasquez's time of 8:30.86 was not only a personal best time, but it shattered his own school record by 34 seconds.

Mets: Stadium Name To Remain Citi Field
Team Exec Calls Deal A Win-Win
      (AP) Citi Field will remain the name of the New York Mets' new ballpark following a government bailout the team believes will help the struggling bank survive its economic crisis. Citigroup agreed in 2006 to pay the Mets $400 million over 20 years for naming rights to the stadium, scheduled to open next year.

New Ballfield In Astoria
     New Ballfield In Astoria City Council Member Peter F. Vallone Jr. cut the ribbon last Saturday, Dec. 6 on a new all-weather turf multi-use ball field at St. Michael's park in Astoria. The $4.2-million project, the first high-tech public field of its kind in Astoria, features a turf soccer and baseball field as well as flood lights that will enable games to take place during the evening.
