Martin Luther School Holds Open House Tonight

Meet Teachers, Learn About Classes

Martin Luther School (MLS) will open its doors at 60-02 Maspeth Ave. in Maspeth to all students currently in grades five through eight and their families tonight, Thursday, Nov. 3, from 6 to 8 p.m. for its annual Fall Open House.

Teachers and administrators will be on hand to answer questions about academic, athletic and extracurricular programs, admission procedures, available modes of transportation, tuition and fees and available financial aid packages. Students entering sixth, seventh and eighth grades will also have the opportunity to learn about the Middle School program, which began this september, and meet Barbara Chin-Sinn, the principal of the Middle School program.

Guided tours will be offered to parents and students, giving all the opportunity to see the school’s stateof the-art science classrooms and conservatory, fitness center, computer lab and library. Also part of the tour will be the school’s most recent project—the creation of a seminar room on the second floor and the renovation of the restrooms on the first floor.

Current students will be leading the tours of the facilities, offering a firsthand view on student life and activities at MLS.

Parents may be interested in speaking with members of the school’s financial aid committee, to learn of scholarship opportunities available to incoming students. More than $90,000 in need-based grants is distributed annually among those families who have applied and qualified. About one-third of the current student body receives some form of financial aid.

Members of the faculty will be available to discuss the academic curriculum of the school, graduation requirements, the Advanced Placement and honors classes and college credit classes. They will explain the benefits of the Advanced Placement curriculum offered, as well as the Regents courses, which will help students when applying to college.

MLS offers a variety of interscholastic athletics, such as basketball (girls and boys), baseball, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field, volleyball and wrestling. In the past few years, the Cougars and Lady Cougars have won Private School Athletic Association (PSAA) championship crowns in cross country track, soccer, and volleyball. The Athletic Department also organizes an intramural program, in which the classes compete against each other. This program goes beyond athletic ability, as students have participated in events such as a food drive and Spirit Day.

Prospective students interested in writing, photography or graphic design will have the opportunity to speak with students currently involved in the production of The Cougar Chronicle, the student-run newspaper, The Invictus yearbook, and the annual literary magazine.

For those who enjoy performing, student members of the Symphonic Band, Concert Choir, Chorus, Drama Club and performers from past musicals will be present to discuss the wealth of opportunities to show off your talent.

Students from other extracurricular activities such as the International Club, the Spanish Club, the French Club, and the Celtic Club will also be on hand to answer any questions.

At the Open House, prospective high school students may register for the upcoming Academic Excellence Scholarship Exam, scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 19 at 8:30 a.m. at MLS. The top three scorers will receive a half-tuition scholarship to MLS; the next top scorers will receive partial, renewable scholarships. More information will be available at the Open House.
