Woodside Street Renamed For Local Volunteer



Members of the Sunnyside Drum Corps joined Rosa Velez (center, holding sign) and City Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer at 49th Street and Queens Boulevard in Woodside last Saturday, Apr. 21 at the ceremony co-naming the street Alejandro Nino Place. Nino, Velez’s son, was a member of the City Volunteer Corps and served as a therapy aide at Coler Memorial Hospital on Roosevelt Island. He later joined the Army National Guard and served until 2007, when he became stricken with cancer and was discharged before dying in March of 2010.
