ENGINES RUN OFF RAILS IN MASPETH

Two locomotives derailed on a freight rail line in Maspeth on Tuesday night, Oct. 7, prompting a large response from emergency personnel, it was reported. Fire Department sources said the derailment occurred at about 6:09 p.m. on the Long Island Rail Road’s Montauk branch near the Andrews Avenue overpass. Numerous Fire Department units, including Haz-Mat 1, responded to the scene along with the 104th Precinct, EMS units, the MTA Police Department, the Office of Emergency Management and the state Department of Environmental Conservation. Firefighters are shown working to remove about 300 gallons of diesel fuel which spilled onto the tracks. There were no reported injuries, though streets in the immediate vicinity of Andrews Avenue were blocked off to accommodate emergency vehicles.
