Fresh Pond Road in Ridgewood is once again adorned with holiday lighting
     Ridgewood‘s Fresh Pond Road shopping strip is lit up for the season after a long holiday hiatus.  On Nov. 20, 31 strands of lights, ranging from Fresh Pond Road and Metropolitan Avenue, down to the intersection of Fresh Pond Road and 71st Avenue, were hung, signaling the start of the holiday season.

Maltese Center for youths opens in Ridgewood
     Ridgewood children now have another place to play and learn.  The former Joseph Garity Veterans Post was officially renamed the Serphin R. Maltese Community Center by the Greater Ridgewood Youth Council (GRYC) on Friday, Dec. 2, as the organization’s newest facility to cater to the neighborhood’s youth.

     Vendors along Myrtle Avenue’s shopping strip in Ridgewood will be seeing more of the NYC Sanitation Department (DSNY), as the Business Improvement District (BID) received funding for an additional day of trash collection service.

Queens pickets commissioner's home again
     The battle of the homeless shelters marches on. Community groups from Queens and Sunset Park, Brooklyn, gathered with victims of homelessness outside of Department of Social Services (DSS) Commissioner Steven Banks’ home in Windsor Terrace, Brooklyn on Saturday, Dec. 3, to protest the increasing number of homeless hotels in their neighborhoods and demand a solution.

Glendale school enjoys a special ‘Brunch with Santa’
     Students and teachers at Redeemer Lutheran School in Glendale got a special visit from the North Pole’s most famoust resident during the school’s “Brunch with Santa” on Sunday, Dec. 4. Santa Claus dropped by to meet with children of all ages and hear their wish lists for Christmas. Some of the participants are pictured above.

Girl Scouts serenade Santa Claus at tree lighting ceremony in Middle Village
     Everyone was a festive mood at the Community United Methodist Church on Metropolitan Avenue in Middle Village on Dec. 2 as children of all ages awaited the arrival of the big man in the red suit.  Santa Claus pulled up to the church just after 6 p.m. in a Mercury Comet Cyclone GT — decked out by the East Coast

     The Kiwanis Club of Glendale helped get local residents into the Christmas spirit during the community’s annual tree lighting on Sunday, Dec. 4. They lit up a giant pine tree at the corner of Myrtle and Cooper avenues, where construction of a new public plaza is ongoing.

Ridgewood rings in the holidays in style with a spectacular concert
     The Ridgewood Property Owners and Civic Association got everyone in the neighborhood into the holiday spirit on the night of Dec. 1 with its annual tree lighting and concert at I.S. 93. Scores gathered at the school located on Forest Avenue between Madison and Woodbine streets for an evening of entertainment that included some local artists performing classic Christmas carols.
